This is my fifth birthday party. I'm holding the presents, of course. My first cousin, Dee Dee, one year younger, is mugging to my left. The others are little Pageland friends.

This photo was taken by my cousin of mother and me standing in the doorway as she was headed back home for Atlanta after sharing Christmas with us. This also was my mother's last Christmas in Pageland. Widowed, and with blackouts beginning that never could be sorted out, she opted to leave South Carolina, where she'd lived her entire life, and Pageland, her home of more than 45 years, to start a new life in a retirement center near me in Florida. Six months after she moved here I developed CFIDS. Since I'd had to fly up during one medical crisis to ensure she got proper care, then make three more trips to empty the house of things that couldn't be moved, sort out what would fit into her place and mine, be present for the packers and movers and fly with her back down here, I 'm eternally grateful that decision was made beforehand. Had I been sick, I honestly don't know who could've done that.
I played clarinet in the regular band, but the band director, seating to my right (I'm the one with glasses) asked me to learn sax and join the dance band. It was quite a coveted honor, as we also got paid. Oh, I look soooo serious. This was a formal publicity shot so we were all on our best behavior.
